CornHole Rules

CornHole Rules

SET UP The CornHole boards are typically placed 27 feet apart, front edge to front edge.

Players: You can play Singles (1-on-1) or Doubles (2-on-2).

For Doubles-Each team has two players, with one player from each team at opposite boards.

Players stand next to the board and toss bean bags at the opposite board.

GAME PLAY

Players take turns tossing their four bean bags. The goal is to get the bag through the hole (3 points) or to land it on the board (1 point).

Only one team scores per round. The score is the difference in points between the two teams.

For example, if Team A scores 5 points and Team B scores 3 points, Team A gets 2 points for that round.

Play continues until one team reaches or exceeds 21 points. The winning team must reach 21 exactly, or pass it if using an alternative scoring method.

Winning

WINNING

The first team to reach 21 points wins the game. If using cancellation scoring, the game must end with exactly 21 points. If a team exceeds 21, their score can revert to a lower score (e.g., 11 or 15) or they must score exactly 21.

Rules for playing with the numbers on the board (2-4-6-8)

Playing cornhole with numbers (2-4-6-8) on the board usually indicates a variation designed for faster scoring or targeted gameplay, often departing from the standard 1-point (on board) and 3-point (in hole) rules. While many numbered boards are used for custom "house rules," the general approach is to use the numbers as multipliers or direct point values for bags entering the hole.

Numbered Board Rules (2-4-6-8)

The numbers typically correspond to the hole (not the surface).

  • Direct Shot (In the hole):If a bag goes into the hole, the team scores the points corresponding to the number near that hole.
    • Example: A bag in the '8' hole = 8 points.
  • On the Board ("Woody"):Bags that land on the board but do not go in the hole are generally worth 1 point each, regardless of the numbers printed on the board, though some house rules may vary this.
  • Knock-ins: If a player knocks an opponent’s bag into a higher-value hole, the opponent gets those points.

Scoring Methods

Numbered boards often use one of two scoring methods:

  • Cancellation Scoring (Most Common):After all 8 bags are thrown, calculate points for both teams. The lower score is subtracted from the higher score, and the difference is awarded to the higher-scoring team.
    • Example: Team A gets 8 points (one bag in '8') and Team B gets 4 points (one bag in '4'). Team A wins the round with 4 points (8-4=4)
  • Non-Deduction (Total) Scoring: Every bag counts, and the first to 21+ wins. This makes the game move much faster.

Winning

  • Be the first team to reach or exceed 21 points at the end of an inning (round).
  • Some variations require you to land exactly on 21. If you go over, you "bust" and usually return to 15 points.
